Computers, during the last two decades or so, have been instrumental in bringing about changes in the way we communicate and gather information and/or knowledge to such an extent that it is hard to find any sphere which has not undergone changes after the advent of computers.

The system of teaching in elementary schools, and of course higher education, is one such area where the advent of computers, coupled with the growth of the World Wide Web, has brought about a complete metamorphosis in the way knowledge is being imparted even in elementary schools.

The Differences Between Laptops and Computers

You can probably immediately guess the differences between desktop computers and laptops. After all, the size is a very obvious difference. That size correlates with everything that makes a laptop. The Xoom's 10.1 inch-screen boasts the same 1280 X 800 screen resolution as you would get on a laptop. The super-fast dual-core processors run the Honeycomb OS and support high speed downloads via the 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi networks. When you consider its 10 hours of sustained video playback and the twin cameras and micro HDMI slot, the Motorola Xoom is as feature rich as any other tablet out there, and significantly cheaper than the comparable iPad 2, though it is currently only available in a 32GB capacity model.

Some have criticized Motorola's phones in the past for not having the most intuitive menus or user interface, but with the touch screen tablet format a lot of this has been resolved and you should find the Xoom easy to set up and use.

3. Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101
Another android tablet which uses the Honeycomb OS is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. This offers a whole range of apps, as Android's app market is almost, if not as strong as Apple's. It has a 9.5 hour battery life, so only slightly less than the iPad and Xoom's 10 hours, even though it is the cheapest tablet reviewed here.

One of the downsides of the Asus in comparison to more expensive models is that the cameras are not as good, with the front camera being only a 1.2 megapixel. It also only comes in a 16GB and 32GB capacity, whereas the iPad, Xoom and Blackberry Playbook all have a 64GB model available. If you don't plan to store endless hours of video and music on your device and aren't too bothered about the resolution of the front camera, the Asus really is a great budget tablet.

4. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi
The Samsung Galaxy Tab is widely regarded as one of the best Android Honeycomb based tablet devices on the market. The hardware is comfortable, attractive and light and it has a high definition 10.1 inch-screen.

The dual-core processors smoothly load the OS and applications very quickly and the Android Honeycomb operating system easily manages the browser, plays media and runs and switches effortlessly between multiple apps. Like the other tablets reviewed here, it has front and rear cameras and built in speakers, and the device offers a 9.5 hour battery life. The only significant drawback that this tablet does not come with built in USB, HDMI, and SD card slots. The versatile Galaxy Tab can work with both Wi-Fi and 3G when you need internet connectivity.

This device is the second most expensive reviewed here after the iPad 2, however it is also probably the iPad's closest competitor from the Android market.

5. Acer Iconia Tab A500
The Acer Iconia is another budget tablet, which offers great value for money for an Android Honeycomb based device with the same dual core NVIDIA CPU as all the other non-Apple devices reviewed here. It has slightly less battery life than the other tablets with 8 hours, but that is still quite a lot of time and will see you through most long haul flights. It is the heaviest of the six machines at 766g, but still looks and feels sleek. One of the main drawbacks is that it only supports Wi-Fi, so you won't be able to use it over 3G when you're out and about and you want to take it online.

6. Blackberry Playbook
In the smartphone market, Blackberry has been a key player for even longer than Apple, and with so many fans of Blackberry phones out there RIM's tablet was eagerly awaited.

The PlayBook has a browser that puts the Web in your hands. Coming in at just 0.9 pounds, 0.4 inches thin, and with a 7 inch-screen, the PlayBook is truly portable, though this is a significantly smaller screen size than any of the other tablets reviewed here.

Aided by Adobe Flash 10.2 support (unlike the iPad), the QNX-powered OS loads sites in full desktop splendor. The dual-core processor lets you multitask on a high resolution display with more pixels than an iPad. With full HD playback, an HDMI outlet, and with cameras front and back, the PlayBook packs a lot into a little space. It offers 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, all at a substantially lower price than the equivalent iPad.

Computers at War in the 70's and 80's

The '70s and the '80s could be easily described as the 'computer war'. Every company had a new kind of computer, better than the last that they wanted to change the world. Everyone knew it was only a matter of time before one was adopted as the standard, with all the advantages for software compatibility this would bring - and they were desperate for it to be their model that made the big time.

In the '70s, two computers nearly became dominant: the Apple II and the Commodore 64. Both of these computers sold in the millions, inspiring a whole generation - they were used for everything from office tasks to games.

It was in 1980, however, that IBM launched its IBM PC, and things really went crazy. IBM's PC wasn't patented. IBM went to a small company named Microsoft to get an operating system for this computer, and ended up with DOS, but Microsoft was willing to license DOS to anyone else who paid their fee. By 1984, 'IBM PC compatible' computers were available, and a de facto standard was born. Software makers could finally write their programs for one operating system and one hardware configuration - and anyone computer that didn't follow the specification to the letter was quickly left with no programs to run.

In 1990, Microsoft released Windows 3.0 (the first version of Windows to be really successful), and the PC's lock on the marketplace was set in stone. The release of the Pentium and Windows 95 made it finally the fastest, cheapest and easiest system around, and it quickly stopped making sense to develop software for anything else.

From then on, the PC was the dominant computer - today, it is estimated to have between 95% and 98% of the market, with almost all the rest being held by Apple Macintosh computers.

Computer History and Impact of Computers to the World

Personal computers have completely revolutionized the way the world, lives, works and conducts business. Strictly-speaking, computers arrived on the scene way back in 1936 when one Konrad Zuse produced what was then called the Z1 computer. This was a cumbersome machine that could perform simple calculations and also crunch simple data. This was not as sophisticated as what we have today but it served to set the foundation for further research and in 1944, John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry from Iowa University built on this model and produced several innovations of the computer which was capable of producing arithmetic calculations, parallel [processing, memory regeneration and other simple computing tasks. The research was taken further at Harvard University, then IBM, the business conglomerate joined the fray and in 1953 produced what was then the world's first sophisticated computer. Even then, it was still large, occupying entire floors and consuming untold power.

As we have mentioned, computers have completely changed the way we live and work. Today, computers are in almost every office. There are still offices in some parts of the world which still don't have computers but this is now rare because without computers, work is inefficient and cumbersome. Take for instance calculations. It would take days for companies to do simple calculations not to mention companies that deal with lots of material and inventory. Computers make this work simple and allow businesses to become more efficient on a day to day basis.

Fourth Generation of Computers

The fourth generation of computers began around 1975 and lasted until around 1985. It recognizes that period of computer history when the integrated circuit chip evolved into the microprocessor, a "computer on a chip." As a result, the first functional desktop computers came into being, beginning with the hobbyist DIY experimental models, such as the Altair 8800 mail-order kit, and progressing to the early commercial models such as the Commodore and the Tandy TRS-80. The period marks the successful introduction and mass production of the early desktop models of the IBM PC, its several clones, and the Apple Macintosh.

A star of the previous generation of computers had been the 1960s Control Data CD 1604 computer. In order to process data it had some 25,000 transistors and 100,000 diodes among thousands of resistors and capacitors, all individually wired together.

The microprocessor was in route to do all the things the CD 1604 did on one chip. It had its birth when researchers at Intel integrated all the processing functions of arithmetic, logic, and control together onto one chip through a process of photolithography.

The CPU read the data and instructions that came in as bytes of 8-bit code. The reading involved performing arithmetic and logic calculations on the code. The resulting data and instructions further allowed control functions to order the code into various streams of data that were written or received as graphics output on a monitor.

The integrated microprocessor chip became known as the central processing unit -- the CPU -- or the "brains" of the model computer. Its entrance heightened the earlier 1958-1959 inventions of the integrated circuit chip by Jack Kilby, at Texas Instruments, and Robert Noyce, then at Fairchild Semiconductor. These two engineers had independently miniaturized the transistor and created the IC chip as a solid-state piece of silicon (or germanium). Their discoveries had essentially brought in the new age of solid-state electronics.

Kilby received the Nobel Prize for the IC chip while Noyce continued its development as founder of the Intel Corporation. Meanwhile, the solid state miniaturization of electronic components immediately pushed technology into new bounds of advances in space, defense and consumer projects. By the 1970s, large-scale integration (LSI) of tens of thousands of transistors on one chip would eventually lead to very-large-scale integration (VLSI) with millions and, then, billions of transistors per chip after the turn of the century.

Under Noyce, Intel released the first CPU-status microprocessor, the 4004, November 15, 1971. The company also developed the first random access memory chip, the RAM chip, to provide temporary storage for the CPU. The 4004 could process 60,000 (60K) instructions per second. It was not until Intel produced the 8-bit 8080 microprocessor, April 1974, that the desktop revolution really began to bloom.

The 8080 had some 6,000 transistors miniaturized by photolithography onto one microprocessor chip. It had a clock speed of 2 MHz, and it could process several hundred thousand instructions per second.

Soon, hobbyists were ordering the MITS Altair 8800, a bare-knuckles computer using the 8080 microprocessor, after it was advertised on the 1975 cover of Popular Electronics. An interpreter unit of the BASIC programming language to boot and instruct the computer had been designed by Bill Gates and Paul Allen.

In 1976, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer, Inc to begin experiments with their first computer models. They used the Z80 microprocessor as a CPU. The two founders began to mass produce their Apple II microcomputer in 1977.

Xerox, Inc. was an important experimenter in the early desktop technologies. By the mid-1970s, Xerox had put together a desktop version of a minicomputer system called the Alto, at their Palo Alto Research Center. Xerox had done much research in using graphics. All the early desktop models used command line controls where the user would type in a line of instruction at the command prompt. Early desktop makers such as Steve Jobs visited Xerox PARC and received ideas on graphics user interfaces and the mouse.

Other third generation of computer milestones include the advent of the IBM PC, with an operating system from Microsoft, and the 1984 introduction of the Apple Macintosh. IBM released the first version of its IBM PC August 1981. By 1982, it was shipping with MS-DOS as the operating system. The next advance model was the IBM PC/AT released August 1984, based on the Intel 16-bit 80286 CPU, with 134,000 transistors. This CPU could reach a speed of 8Mhz. Many clones were produced based on the IBM-PC models, notably from Compac.

With distinctive flair, during a Super Bowl XVIII commercial, January 22, 1984, Apple released the Macintosh desktop computer. Setting the Apple trademark, the Macintosh became known for its engaging graphics capabilities. The system, with a Motorola 16-bit 68k CPU, was proprietary and could not be cloned.

The Evolution of Technology - The History of Computers

While computers are now an important part of the lives of human beings, there was a time where computers did not exist. Knowing the history of computers and how much progression has been made can help you understand just how complicated and innovative the creation of computers really is.

Unlike most devices, the computer is one of the few inventions that does not have one specific inventor. Throughout the development of the computer, many people have added their creations to the list required to make a computer work. Some of the inventions have been different types of computers, and some of them were parts required to allow computers to be developed further.

The Beginning

Perhaps the most significant date in the history of computers is the year 1936. It was in this year that the first "computer" was developed. It was created by Konrad Zuse and dubbed the Z1 Computer. This computer stands as the first as it was the first system to be fully programmable. There were devices prior to this, but none had the computing power that sets it apart from other electronics.

It wasn't until 1942 that any business saw profit and opportunity in computers. This first company was called ABC computers, owned and operated by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. Two years later, the Harvard Mark I computer was developed, furthering the science of computing.

Over the course of the next few years, inventors all over the world began to search more into the study of computers, and how to improve upon them. Those next ten years say the introduction of the transistor, which would become a vital part of the inner workings of the computer, the ENIAC 1 computer, as well as many other types of systems. The ENIAC 1 is perhaps one of the most interesting, as it required 20,000 vacuum tubes to operate. It was a massive machine, and started the revolution to build smaller and faster computers.

The age of computers was forever altered by the introduction of International Business Machines, or IBM, into the computing industry in 1953. This company, over the course of computer history, has been a major player in the development of new systems and servers for public and private use. This introduction brought about the first real signs of competition within computing history, which helped to spur faster and better development of computers. Their first contribution was the IBM 701 EDPM Computer.

A Programming Language Evolves

A year later, the first successful high level programming language was created. This was a programming language not written in 'assembly' or binary, which are considered very low level languages. FORTRAN was written so that more people could begin to program computers easily.

The year 1955, the Bank of America, coupled with Stanford Research Institute and General Electric, saw the creation of the first computers for use in banks. The MICR, or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, coupled with the actual computer, the ERMA, was a breakthrough for the banking industry. It wasn't until 1959 that the pair of systems were put into use in actual banks.

During 1958, one of the most important breakthroughs in computer history occurred, the creation of the integrated circuit. This device, also known as the chip, is one of the base requirements for modern computer systems. On every motherboard and card within a computer system, are many chips that contain information on what the boards and cards do. Without these chips, the systems as we know them today cannot function.

Gaming, Mice, & the Internet

For many computer users now, games are a vital part of the computing experience. 1962 saw the creation of the first computer game, which was created by Steve Russel and MIT, which was dubbed Spacewar.

The mouse, one of the most basic components of modern computers, was created in 1964 by Douglass Engelbart. It obtained its name from the "tail" leading out of the device.

One of the most important aspects of computers today was invented in 1969. ARPA net was the original Internet, which provided the foundation for the Internet that we know today. This development would result in the evolution of knowledge and business across the entire planet.

It wasn't until 1970 that Intel entered the scene with the first dynamic RAM chip, which resulted in an explosion of computer science innovation.

On the heels of the RAM chip was the first microprocessor, which was also designed by Intel. These two components, in addition to the chip developed in 1958, would number among the core components of modern computers.

A year later, the floppy disk was created, gaining its name from the flexibility of the storage unit. This was the first step in allowing most people to transfer bits of data between unconnected computers.

The first networking card was created in 1973, allowing data transfer between connected computers. This is similar to the Internet, but allows for the computers to connect without use of the Internet.

Household PC's Emerge

The next three years were very important for computers. This is when companies began to develop systems for the average consumer. The Scelbi, Mark-8 Altair, IBM 5100, Apple I and II, TRS-80, and the Commodore Pet computers were the forerunners in this area. While expensive, these machines started the trend for computers within common households.

One of the most major breathroughs in computer software occurred in 1978 with the release of the VisiCalc Spreadsheet program. All development costs were paid for within a two week period of time, which makes this one of the most successful programs in computer history.

1979 was perhaps one of the most important years for the home computer user. This is the year that WordStar, the first word processing program, was released to the public for sale. This drastically altered the usefulness of computers for the everyday user.

The IBM Home computer quickly helped revolutionize the consumer market in 1981, as it was affordable for home owners and standard consumers. 1981 also saw the the mega-giant Microsoft enter the scene with the MS-DOS operating system. This operating system utterly changed computing forever, as it was easy enough for everyone to learn.

Computers saw yet another vital change during the year of 1983. The Apple Lisa computer was the first with a graphical user interface, or a GUI. Most modern programs contain a GUI, which allows them to be easy to use and pleasing for the eyes. This marked the beginning of the out dating of most text based only programs.

Beyond this point in computer history, many changes and alterations have occurred, from the Apple-Microsoft wars, to the developing of microcomputers and a variety of computer breakthroughs that have become an accepted part of our daily lives. The Evolution of Personal Computers

The initial moment in the history of computers is tightly connected to Charles Babbage, who projected an analytical machine in 1830, a machine which had a tremendous contribution to the computers we know today. His ideas were later outrun by the technological possibilities of his times. Pascal and Leibnitz also made some attempts in this direction in the seventeenth century, but they had no luck.

The next reference point is 1937. That year, Howard Aiken projected a computer with automatic command, which was based on a combination between Babbage's ideas and the electromechanical computers manufactured by IBM. Its production started in 1939 and ended in 1944, the computer being named Mark I. This computer was the first electromechanical computer. The next step was the ENIAC, which was the first digital computer. It contained about eighteen thousand electronic tubes and did about five thousand calculations per second, having a memory of twenty numbers represented in decimals. There were a lot of calculations involved with the ENIAC and with Mark I, these calculations working at the same problem in parallel and being directed by a single command unit.

The next version gave up on this parallel structure because the specialists considered that the speed of a calculation unit achieved with the help of electronic circuits was high enough. However, this solution was adopted again after 1980 and finally, INTEL made a supercomputer in 1996. This computer used over seven thousand PENTIUM processors which used the "massive calculation" technique. This technique was used for simulating nuclear tests, for genetic research and many more.

Upcoming Tablet Computers Launched at 2011 CES

The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has brought a new wave of innovative, slender touchscreen tablets PCs and electronic reading devices to the marketplace.

Some of these tablets will allow you to surf the Web, watch movies and play casual games without the need to rely on a bulky laptop and its traditional keyboard. Other gadgets focus on features such as reading for long periods of time without killing the batteries and without eye strain, e.g. the Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device.

Many more tablets are expected to be launched this year. In a new 5-year forecast just released, Forrester Research said it expected tablet PCs to grow as fast as MP3 players in the United States, and projected that 82 million Americans would own tablet computers by 2015.
